Planting Trees for a Sustainable Future
Sharifa, a dedicated farmer from Tulo village, has embraced tree planting as a way to improve her land and secure her family’s future. Through APOPO’s HeroTREEs in partnership with Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT), she is planting a diverse range of trees that not only benefit the environment but also provide long-term economic and social advantages. In her own words, she shares how this initiative is transforming her life and her community.
“I have been farming for many years with my husband while raising our four children. My eldest is 27, followed by 18, 13, and 10 years old. We also have one grandchild. Our home is in Tulo here in the Uluguru mountain, where we rely on farming for our livelihood.
I first heard about the tree planting project before joining in September 2021. Seeing other farmers benefit from SAT’s programs inspired me to start planting trees on my four farms. Over time, I have planted 1,332 trees, including cinnamon, cloves, and vanilla, as well as timber trees that will provide lumber for my children in the future.
Before joining the program, I used to grow maize, carrots, and strawberries. Since learning about organic farming, I now let organic remains decompose naturally instead of burning them, creating rich manure that nourishes my soil. This has improved my farming methods and encouraged me to plant more trees.
Our family sells produce in town, transporting it on foot and by motorbike to reach the market. My husband helps me with farming, while my children focus on their education. However, they also contribute by watering and caring for the trees around our home.
Looking ahead, I believe this project will benefit us greatly. In ten years, my family will have access to sustainable resources—some trees will provide economic value, while others will contribute to environmental conservation. I am grateful for this opportunity and hope for continued education on sustainable farming so that we can protect our land and secure our future.”
