APOPO UK was incorporated on 19 August 2019 and secured registered charitable status with the Charities Commission (England & Wales) on 18 May 2022. The APOPO UK Trustee Board are using their skills and networks to help strengthen APOPO’s collaboration with existing UK partners, seek out and forge new organisational relationships, generate resources and support increasing engagement with the UK public.

Alan Mathers - Trustee & Fundraising Subgroup Chair
Alan knows APOPO from his visit to the training facilities at Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania, where despite his initial trepidation he made great friends with APOPO’S HeroRATs. Alan studied at St Andrews University and has an MBA from London Business School. His career background is in finance and management consultancy. He also spent the past few years in the development sector, including several years with a social enterprise in Tanzania. He has served on the board of a number of other charity organisations.
Dr Cameron Watson - Trustee
Cam is a deep tech strategist who works with start-ups to bring innovative solutions with high social impact to market. He previously worked as a management consultant specialising in the life sciences sector and has worked with a wide array of organisations ranging from international mega corps to non-profits. Cam holds a PhD from UCL in Biochemistry and Biotechnology where he researched novel biological solutions to environmental sensing and monitoring.
Alan Macdonald OBE - Trustee
Alan Macdonald has had a 27 year career in Mine Action serving with the United Nations and Non Governmental Organisations in many mine impacted countries across the world. Notably in Afghanistan for a combined total of 8 years, for which he was honoured with the OBE for services to Mine Clearance. He was Chair of the International Mine Action Standards Board. Alan has wide ranging experience of leading programmes, focused on the clearance of mines, unexploded ordnance and the defeat of improvised explosive devices using manual, mechanical and animal detection systems. Prior to working in Mine Action he served in the British Army for 12 years. He has a Masters in Development Management.
Ros Bird - Operations & Fundraising Manager
The Board is supported on a part time basis by Ros in a non-voting Board Secretary capacity. With over 24 years experience working as a multi-income stream fundraiser for both major, medium and small charities, she is herself a Trustee (past and present) with international African humanitarian and conservation charities. Ros is a non-profit specialist, advising a range of organisations on charity set up, fundraising and governance. She has devised and implements ongoing operational processes for APOPO UK, is taking a lead on fundraising and liaises with the international APOPO team/supports APOPO UK volunteers.
