Protecting Biodiversity and Supporting Farmers
The Uluguru Mountain Forest in Tanzania is a vital biodiversity hotspot, yet unsustainable farming practices threaten its ecosystems. In partnership with Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT), APOPO trains farmers in sustainable organic agro-ecological methods, improving soil and water quality, food security, and livelihoods while reducing deforestation and preserving biodiversity. Slash-and-burn agriculture, driven by limited resources and market access, has rapidly depleted indigenous forests, endangering both local communities and the environment.
A Sustainable Solution
Through the HeroTREEs initiative, smallholder farmers learn to integrate tree planting with organic agriculture, restoring soil fertility, boosting crop yields, and increasing resilience to climate change. Planting 35 native tree species enhances biodiversity while providing timber, food, medicine, and income opportunities. Over five years, 50,000 trees will be planted, and hundreds of farmers trained, reducing poverty by promoting self-sufficiency. With your support, we can preserve this critical ecosystem and build a greener future.
