Syntropic Agroforestry

Syntropic agroforestry mimics natural forest ecosystems to restore soil health, boost biodiversity, and improve farm productivity.

Food Forests

HeroTREEs helps farmers break free from traditional monoculture by introducing syntropic agroforestry—an approach that restores soil health, improves yields, and provides long-term income while not only growing forests but even expanding them. HeroTREEs implements multiple projects to build experience and knowledge in syntropic agroforestry. This work began with a 5,000m² demonstration and research plot at APOPO’s operational headquarters on Sokoine University of Agriculture campus.

Tanzania and Beyond

HeroTREEs collaborates with other organizations to establish demonstration sites in Tanzania and in other countries. HeroTREEs aims to scale its impact, particularly in areas where APOPO has cleared landmines, helping to restore and revitalize these landscapes. We run a Community of Practice that connects syntropic agroforestry practitioners, regularly sharing new insights and offering frequent training sessions to help members share, expand and refine their knowledge. The department offers co-creation in developing systems and projects.

Why Syntropic Farming?

Syntropic farming is a regenerative approach that mimics the structure and function of natural forests to restore soil health, boost biodiversity, and increase farm productivity. Unlike conventional monocultural farming, which depletes soil nutrients and depends on chemical inputs, syntropic agroforestry works with nature, not against it. Benefits are:

Soil Regeneration – Organic matter and microbes naturally restore soil fertility. Continuous pruning enriches the soil, accelerating regeneration.
Water Retention & Climate Resilience – Tree roots reduce erosion and improve water storage, while canopy shade regulates temperature and moisture, protecting crops from extreme weather.
Biodiversity & Pest Control – Diverse plants attract beneficial insects and predators, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.
Increased Productivity & Income – Multiple crops ensure year-round harvests, providing food, timber, and income without expanding farmland.
