APOPO UK

APOPO UK was incorporated on 19 August 2019 and secured registered charitable status with the Charities Commission (England & Wales) on 18 May 2022.   The APOPO UK Trustee Board are using their skills and networks to help strengthen APOPO’s collaboration with existing UK partners, seek out and forge new organisational relationships, generate resources and support increasing engagement with the UK public.  

Susan Robertson – Trustee Chair

Susan Robertson
Susan Robertson is co-founder of OnePoint5Media and a Senior Consultant with the United Nations, where she leads on strategic communications for an inter-agency initiative. Susan is a creative business leader within the sustainable and social innovation landscape of Europe. She has shaped strategies and innovation campaigns within the UN, the European Parliament, and across the private sector worldwide. Skills which she is passionately putting to good use with APOPO UK.

Justin Bedingfeld – Trustee Treasurer

Justin Bedingfeld – Trustee Treasurer
Justin is a seasoned Finance Leader who has over 25 years experience in the Technology Sector, firstly with Microsoft and more recently with Clinisys. He is a CIMA Qualified Accountant. Justin enjoys seeing how technological solutions can be used to drive progress for the benefit of businesses and their customers. Applying his experience of managing business units’ performance to set up and monitor performance and decision-making systems, he joins his colleagues on the APOPO UK Board to help enable the charity to grow strategically and operationally. Justin also brings a wider experience of working as a volunteer in the non profit sector in other advisory and supervisory financial focussed roles. As our Honorary Treasurer he will ensure that APOPO UK maintains high standards of governance, transparency of financial and impact reporting and that the charitable entity complies with the stringent requirements of the Charity Commission (England and Wales) and Companies House.

Alan Mathers - Trustee & Fundraising Subgroup Chair

Alan Mathers - Trustee & Fundraising Sub-Group Chair

Alan knows APOPO from his visit to the training facilities at Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania, where despite his initial trepidation he made great friends with APOPO’S HeroRATs. Alan studied at St Andrews University and has an MBA from London Business School. His career background is in finance and management consultancy. He also spent the past few years in the development sector, including several years with a social enterprise in Tanzania. He has served on the board of a number of other charity organisations.

Dr Cameron Watson - Trustee

Cameron Watson - Trustee

Cam is a deep tech strategist who works with start-ups to bring innovative solutions with high social impact to market. He previously worked as a management consultant specialising in the life sciences sector and has worked with a wide array of organisations ranging from international mega corps to non-profits. Cam holds a PhD from UCL in Biochemistry and Biotechnology where he researched novel biological solutions to environmental sensing and monitoring.

Alan Macdonald OBE - Trustee

Alan Macdonald OBE - Trustee

Alan Macdonald has had a 27 year career in Mine Action serving with the United Nations and Non Governmental Organisations in many mine impacted countries across the world. Notably in Afghanistan for a combined total of 8 years, for which he was honoured with the OBE for services to Mine Clearance. He was Chair of the International Mine Action Standards Board. Alan has wide ranging experience of leading programmes, focused on the clearance of mines, unexploded ordnance and the defeat of improvised explosive devices using manual, mechanical and animal detection systems. Prior to working in Mine Action he served in the British Army for 12 years. He has a Masters in Development Management.

Mark Unsworth - Trustee

Mark is a solicitor who set up and ran a firm in North London.  In addition to his Trustee duties Mark has taken on the additional role of Board/Company Secretary supporting the UK Board in a governance, compliance and administrative capacity.    His interest in world affairs brought the work and aims of APOPO to his attention.

Yasmine Colijn - Trustee

Yasmine has been working in the humanitarian sector for the last 10 years, primarily in conflict settings in both emergencies and protracted crises. Her main technical areas of focus have been camp management and accountability towards affected populations – before moving into more general emergency and grant-making work. She has worked across Iraq, South Sudan, Myanmar,Tanzania, Greece, and the Bahamas, for a variety of INGOs and the UN. She currently works as Head of Emergency Programmes at Choose Love and is passionate about finding local solutions to displacement crises.

Emma Mortiboy - Operations & Fundraising Manager

APOPO UK Operations and Fundraising activities are supported on a part -time basis by Emma, who has a background in fundraising and marketing management, Trusts and Major Donor partnerships. Emma is passionate about the natural world and human welfare. She has completed two degrees, the first in English Literature and the second in Natural Sciences. Emma was already aware of APOPO prior to starting and was very excited to join the APOPO team in January 2021 – she is hugely passionate about the work APOPO does!

Emma is based in the UK and is always happy to help in regards to any donor support.
