20 Newly Trained HeroRATs Deployed to Tackle Landmines in Cambodia

APOPO HeroRATs take leave of their trainins in Tanzania

In July 2024, 20 HeroRATs were deployed by APOPO to Cambodia, joining the crucial effort to address the persistent problem of landmines in the country. 14 of these specially trained African giant pouched rats, capable of detecting explosives with high precision, are now set to make Cambodia safer by detecting and helping clear landmines across the country. The remaining six will be joining the ranks at the APOPO Visitor Center in Siem Reap for mock demonstrations of our mine detection rat methodology.

The young HeroRATs traveled from APOPO’s operational headquarters in Morogoro, Tanzania, where they underwent extensive training to hone their skills in detecting explosives. After completing their preparation at APOPO’s Training and Innovation Center, the rats embarked on a long journey to Cambodia. The rats handled the trip wonderfully, thanks to specially designed crates that ensured their comfort and safety, along with careful monitoring of their well-being throughout the long journey.

The Landmine Challenge in Cambodia

Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, with millions of landmines and unexploded ordnance scattered across the nation. These remnants of past conflicts continue to pose serious risks to communities, obstructing agriculture, development, and safety. The clearance of these landmines is essential for the country’s progress, and APOPO has been actively working on this issue since 2014 in collaboration with the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC).

APOPO’s work in Cambodia involves using Mine Detection Rats to quickly and efficiently detect landmines. Trained at APOPO’s facility in Tanzania, they underwent extensive training to identify even the faintest traces of explosives. Before deployment, they had to  pass stringent tests to ensure they are fully prepared for fieldwork. The arrival of 20 new HeroRATs in Cambodia represents a significant boost to these ongoing efforts.

The Impact of Landmine Clearance

Clearing landmines is not just about removing a threat; it’s about reclaiming land for productive use. In Cambodia, landmines have long hindered agricultural activities, infrastructure development, and housing projects. APOPO’s work helps to clear these obstacles, enabling communities to rebuild and prosper.

Since beginning operations in Cambodia, APOPO has cleared large areas of land, returning them safely to local communities. This work is critical in supporting Cambodia’s development and ensuring that families can live and work without fear of hidden explosives.

HeroRATs in Action

Upon their arrival in Cambodia, the 20 HeroRATs were given time to adjust to their new environment. This acclimation period allows them to get used to the local climate and surroundings before starting work in active minefields. Once settled, they will undergo additional external accreditation testing to ensure they are ready to take on their important tasks.

The use of HeroRATs is a unique approach to the problem of landmines, and their efficiency in detecting explosives significantly accelerates the clearance process. This innovative method is not only effective but also cost-efficient, making it a vital tool in APOPO’s landmine clearance efforts.

Through their work, both in Cambodia and abroad, APOPO’s HeroRATs are making a tangible impact in the fight against landmines. These efforts are part of a broader mission to create safer communities and promote development in areas affected by landmines. Everyone at APOPO is proud of how well the rats have adapted to their new home so far, and we’re excited to see the positive impact they will have in their new home.

APOPO-CMAC accreditation testing August 2024

Externally Accredited

All 14 of our newly arrived mine detection rats have passed external accreditation and are now ready for deployment! On August 27th and 28th, these HeroRATs successfully completed the independent accreditation process by the local Mine Action Authority. This milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, allowing the HeroRATs to begin their critical work in Cambodia’s real minefields. They will be distributed across teams in various provinces, adding much-needed capacity to ensure safer communities and support development in formerly hazardous areas.
