APOPO Annual Report 2022
APOPO is thrilled to present its 2022 Annual Report, a testament to a year filled with resilience, progress, and transformative initiatives, all made possible through the unwavering support of our supporters.
In the face of challenges, APOPO has continuously adapted, remaining steadfast in its commitment to its mission. Since its inception, APOPO’s Mine Detection Animals have played a vital role in locating and destroying over 155,000 landmines and explosives. These life-saving efforts have benefited nearly 2 million people residing in areas previously plagued by these hazardous remnants of conflict. Furthermore, APOPO’s groundbreaking research utilizing trained rats for tuberculosis (TB) detection has identified over 27,000 TB-positive patients who had previously gone undiagnosed by local clinics, providing them with a renewed chance at life and stopping the spread of TB to over 270,000 family, friends and colleagues.
The year 2022 marked a significant period of growth and transformation for APOPO. APOPO’s Mine Action teams successfully expanded operations to include two new countries: Senegal and Azerbaijan, thereby extending the organization’s reach and impact in these regions. The organization successfully expanded its partnership network to now include over 160 clinics that actively collaborate with the TB detection programs. Additionally, significant progress has been made in innovation projects focused on training rats to support Search & Rescue operations and the detection of illegally trafficked wildlife samples. These projects are moving into the advanced stages of development, showcasing promising results and immense potential for real-world applications.
Throughout the year, APOPO witnessed the power of collaboration and dedication in achieving our goals. The teams, made up of passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds, worked tirelessly to overcome obstacles and deliver results. APOPO fostered a culture that values innovation, and sustainability, ensuring that efforts not only meet immediate needs but also create lasting change.
This year in review showcases the achievements and milestones across the three departments: Mine Action, Tuberculosis Detection and Innovation. These accomplishments, would not have been possible without the generous support of donors, partners, and stakeholders. APOPO extends its deepest gratitude for the continued support, which has propelled us forward and enabled us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
