Official Belgian NGO status.
APOPO went through the rigorous process of formal accreditation by the Belgian government for official Belgian NGO status. We were thrilled to pass various criteria and underwent an organizational audit of our management capacities. This audit was conducted in the first quarter of 2021 by Ernst & Young (EY) and took into account the complexity of the organization, determined by the turnover, geographical and thematic spread, diversity of partners and donors and staff.
APOPO is humbled and proud to announce that it has been accepted as an official partner of the Directorate-general for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD) who are committed to supporting APOPO with a €5 million grant over the next 5 years. This is a huge milestone for us and an endorsement of the quality of the organization which will encourage stakeholders to choose APOPO as a trusted partner.
Program Support
With this generous grant, APOPO will support four of APOPO’s programs: Mine Action Cambodia and Angola, Tuberculosis Detection Tanzania as well as Training & Research in Tanzania. APOPO is incredibly grateful to long-term dedicated partners such as the DGD, with whose help and continued focus, enables us to save more lives, and get the job done in the shortest possible timeframe.
APOPO is a humanitarian organization. Which means the focus of our work is protecting the lives of men, women, and children, as well as animals and wildlife. Our Mine Action teams protect people and their livelihoods from weapons that have little to do with them. APOPO also carries out innovative research using tuberculosis detection rats (nicknamed HeroRATs) as a cost-efficient, rapid diagnostic tool joining global efforts to curb the spread of this deadly disease. And all of the HeroRATs begin their lives at our Training Center in Morogoro, Tanzania. This is also where our innovative research empirically informs training and operational protocols for new and existing applications.
